My question for you: Do you turn your students on to stuff like this? Or do you let them sort out their own technological short cuts? At this point, I’ve got my students using google chat/apps and dropbox, but I normally don’t clue them in to new technologies such as citation tools. But maybe I should? What are your thoughts?

The English marketing department has decided to try and recruit some new English majors, so we’ll be hosting an event or two this spring to help them. The first event will be held on Wednesday, February 23rd at 1pm in Armstrong 208 during our coffee hour. There will be five panelists representing each of the five tracks, and then any other graduate students are welcome to join in during the Q&A portion of the event. The more English majors we have, the better, so let us know if you have any good ideas for future events!

State of the Union Address

This might be more on the technical communications side of the English spectrum, but I was excited to see what Whitehouse.gov did for the State of the Union Address. As more people migrate to watching “television” on the Web (really, more like watching “media” on the Web), more agencies and companies are offering an enhanced viewing experience (about time people).
Whitehouse.gov made the State of the Union address visually appealing and a combination of a Keynote presentation and the live video footage of the actual speech. See screen shot above.

Hopefully more organizations and networks will follow this lead, utilizing more of the options available for communicating effectively.

1) Elections for GSEA officers are approaching – Dana handed out position descriptions and discussed the following:
- We are here to serve the student body
- The GSEA is designed to be of service to the English department
- We are a point of contact for other grad students

2) Mock Conference
- A mock conference will be held on Wednesday, March 16th at 2:00pm (directly following the weekly coffee hour).
- If you are interested in presenting at MSU’s GRC conference in April 11th -12th, the mock presentation will give you opportunity to practice and receive feedback.
- We hope to ask Dr. Banschbach, Dr. Bunkers, and Dr. Camp to sit in on the presentations and provide feedback.
- Dana will send out emails

Once elected, the new officers will spend the last few months of this semester shadowing the person who currently hold the position in order to learn the ins-and-outs of their job.
