Plagiarism and Students

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:01 am by paulacs

As I was wandering through the cyber world I found a great article by Stephen Wilhoit that is appropriate with recent conversations and discussions flittering around the offices regarding students, their essays, and the inevitatable “P” of Doom <Plagiarism>.  It provokes some interesting thoughts and just provides us with another wonderful resource in our teaching and writing arsenals!

“I wish someone would have told me that”: Sage advice from the merry-go-round of Academia

Posted in GSEA Business, GSEA Events, GSEA Social Announcement, Links or Tools, Uncategorized, Useful Websites at 4:24 am by paulacs

Hi!

Just passing along a few great suggestions that a PhD colleague sent me a few days ago that falls under the general category of “I wish someone would have told me this when I started…”. Fortunately, my mental sticky notes under this category are diminishing thanks to GSEA organization (shameless plug as a cofounder but its true, nonetheless); amazing colleagues and cohort mentors and general observations and eavesdropping at academic events and conferences. So without further adieu, on to the much needed information:

a.) Getting What You Came For – Robert Peters

(I own this and love it. It was my bedside reading guide my final semester as an undergrad! If you want to borrow it let me know!**). This book covers the gamit of anything you could consider or may not want to while undertaking graduate work at the M.A. or PhD level: committees, advisors, thesis and dissertation topics, choosing programs, negotiating unhappy office relationships, funding and defense of thesis and dissertation coursework.

b.) Writing Your Journal Article in 12 Weeks – Wendy Belcher

I know some of us aren’t quite here at “publication” level but just one more monkey to add to the barrel! Plus, I actually spied this on a few professors’ shelves in the departments, so if they’re using it then it must be good.. right?!

c.) Surviving Your Academic Job Hunt – Kathryn Hume

Sage advice strictly for PhD candidates, wanna-bes, contenders and  hopefully-someday- potentials in the Humanities. Anything to give us an edge and a scrapper’s chance over the competition!

Some literary food  for thought and light weekend reading..enjoy!
